Special to the Tribune
The Prescott Valley Charter School's Youth Chamber members recently collected more than $485 for the Yavapai Food Bank.
Youth Chamber members collected raffle items from the community and had a drawing at the school, open to students and staff. Then each group of secondary school classes (grades 7-12) had a glass gallon jug to fill with change for three weeks. They called this "Change for Change." The winning class group (11,12) won a "Dessert Buffet" provided by the Youth Chamber.
With the money collected, two club officers, President Tyler Sanderson and Secretary Misty Baker, went shopping to buy basic food items. On Friday, Nov. 13, they delivered 1,500 items to the Yavapai Food Bank in Prescott Valley.
When the students and their advisor, Bill Suedmeyer, arrived at the food bank, they were overcome by the number of people waiting for food. The students saw that most of the shelves were bare.
The experience led the Youth Chamber to issue a challenge to all youth and adult service groups: support the Yavapai Food Bank, whether it be with direct food collections or monetary donations. The United States has a long tradition of community service and compassion, and no one should go hungry. Now is the time to step forward and do what you can do.
