Prescott Valley continues to be proactive in its finances as the recession continues. This coming week, town workers will begin a four-day workweek, with the exception of the Magistrate Court, the library - located in its new building - and the Police Department.
The court and library will observe a furlough one day a month, and the Police Department will go to a flexible furlough for employees to save money.
A committee of town employees came up with the cost-cutting measures when Town Manager Larry Tarkowski asked them to cut operating expenses by 5 percent because the town's revenues are still down.
Because a representation of employees crafted the cost cuts, hopefully it is one that is the least painful to the most of them, and one that will enable as many people as possible to stay employed until things improve on the financial front.
The town also saved money and jobs by staffing the new library with existing town employees.
Prescott Valley is fortunate that it has rising sales tax figures to keep it afloat as its construction and other activities stay static or continue to drop.
The town has weathered the recession with a lot less pain than many other cities and towns, and stands to move ahead when the economy picks up. Let's hope that happens soon.
